Our InterProd Team
The Summit family is the whole reason for our success and why we have been a favorite choice since 1995. Whether you are coming for Extemp, Oratory, Informative, Interp, or Debate, we have a staff that is experienced in high school speech and debate. Our senior staff members typically have at least a decade of experience. We also use recent graduates to keep us fresh with new ideas and approaches. Below is the staff that will be worked with us in 2017. New additions are added all the time. We invite you to come back frequently and see who is being added!
Bob Ickes -- Curriculum director (Oratory, Informative)

Bob Ickes-- a finalist himself at the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA), National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL), Emory University, and Harvard University tournaments—has been coaching high-school speech for the past 15 years and began working with the Interprod family in 2004. Having edited and or written for Newsweek, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, Details, The Hollywood Reporter, POZ, and Andy Warhol’s Interview, among other publications, he has coached or helped coach the writing of original orations that have won Harvard and reached the elimination and final rounds of The Glenbrooks, Emory, Yale, Berkeley, and Stanford tournaments, as well as the final rounds of the National Forensic League and National Catholic Forensic League championships. Bob has also edited eight books, including, most recently, “The Architecture of the Novel,” by Anne Lamott and Jane Vandenburgh; The New York Times Notable Book “Edward Kennedy: An Intimate Biography,” by Burton Hersh; and “The Price of Justice: A True Story of Two Men and Their Epic Battle Against Corruption and Greed in Coal Country,” by Laurence Leamer.
Joele denis -- Curriculum director (interp)

Joele Denis is a speech coach at Cypress Bay High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He has coached numerous tournament champions and finalists at the most prestigious invitationals including Harvard University, George Mason and the Glenbrooks. Joele is one of the most revered young coaches in speech - giving the keynote address in 2017 at the Pennsylvania Speech & Debate Coaches Fall Conference about Program Oral Interpretation.
C. Ryan Joyce -- Curriculum director (middle school)

C. Ryan Joyce is the Director of Forensics at Phoenix Country Day School in Phoenix, Arizona. C. Ryan was named the 2017 NSDA Middle School National Coach of the Year. A three time high school national finalist himself (OO and DUO), he's no stranger to the National Stage. His program is the most successful middle school program in the country with more than 50 national finalists and more than 10 NSDA National Champions. Kate Hamm, currently Director of Speech and Debate at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove, FL has been educating students in speech and debate for over thirty years! During those years her students have won, or had top finishes, at state and national tournaments in Lincoln Douglas, Policy, Public Forum and Congressional Debate, as well as Extemporaneous Speaking and all Interpretation events.
Her coaching has taken her around the nation and around the world where she helped develop debate curriculum for schools in Amsterdam, South Korea, Vietnam, and Myanmar. Additionally, she has taught speech/debate institutes and workshops in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, California, Colorado, Kentucky, Florida, Italy, Bahrain, and China.

Luke Ostrander is the Director of Speech at Apple Valley High School in Minnesota, and worked with students in Iowa and coached in Nebraska before moving to Minnesota in 2015. In his more than years in this activity, he has coached 67 students to the NIETOC, NCFL, NSDA and MS NSDA National Tournaments with multiple octo, quarter and semifinalists as well as 13 national finalists. Mr. Ostrander has also coached numerous state finalists and champions in Nebraska and Minnesota in Extemp, Humor, Drama, Poetry, Prose, Informative and Oratory. With a background in theatre, he has a passion for bringing stories to life in fresh and genuine ways, especially ones that need to be told in our world today.
Cory clark Shay
Cory is the Head Coach at Gwynedd Mercy Academy in Pennsylvania. Cory’s teams have had an amazing amount of success for the small size of their program. Cory has coached PHSSL State Champions in Original Oratory, Informative Speaking, and Poetry as well as dozens of PHSSL Finalist and Semifinalist awardees and over a hundred PHSSL qualifiers. In 2018, Cory was inducted into the Pennsylvania High School Speech League Hall of Fame. Cory has coached champions of prestigious invitational tournaments such as Harvard, George Mason, Yale, and Villiger. Under Cory’s tenure, Gwynedd has had over 75 qualifiers to NCFL Nationals including 14 students who finished in the Top 20 in the country at NCFL Nationals. She has qualified over 25 students to the NSDA National Finals, the Tournament of Champions (Kentucky), and the NIETOC National Finals, including a National Runner-Up (2nd Place) in Original Oratory at the NIETOC Nationals.

Sterling is a freshman at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. Sterling competed for Cypress Bay High School in Fort Lauderdale where she won the Tournament of Champions National Championship in Oral Interpretation. During her career, she had many late elimination round finishes including FFL State (2nd in OI and Semis in DUO), Sunvitational (3rd in HI, 4th in DUO, and 4th in POI), George Mason (6th in POI, Quarters in HI, Quarters in Poetry), Emory (Quarters in Prose/Poetry), Bronx Science (3rd in Prose Poetry) and Glenbrooks (Quarters in POI). This is Sterling's second year working at InterProd.
Andrea is a freshman at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. She competed for Braddock High School in Miami, Florida. Andrea had a very successful speech career - winning the Princeton tournament and the Blue Key Tournament in Dramatic Interpretation. She also placed 3rd at the Tournament of Champions. She also reached elimination rounds at Emory University, Cypress Bay, Berkeley, the Sunvitational and the NSDA National Tournament. This is Andrea's second year working at InterProd.
Kimberly Lee is a graduating senior from Summit High School who has a strong passion for choosing speech with a meaning, and will be continuing her speech career through college. She comes with a strong belief that every speech should come from a place of truth and reality, no matter what category.She has finaled at numerous national tournaments, including being a 3-Time Yale Champion, Glenbrooks Champion, UKTOC Champion, 3-time Harvard finalist, and 2-time National semi-finalist. Her concentrations lie in DI and POI, but, as she says, "my roots are in OI, and OI will continue to have a dear spot in my heart." She is incredibly excited to join the Interprod staff this summer, and cannot wait to see everybody there this summer!
JJ Kapur is a senior at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. He will be attending Stanford University in the fall where he plans on studying Political Science. When JJ’s not lugging his 20-pound backpack around the hallways at Valley, he’s traveling the country with his speech and debate team.
Last year, JJ was named the Original Oratory National Champion at the National Speech and Debate Tournament, placing first among 250 of the nation’s best orators. JJ’s victory capped off a string of high profile awards in 2017, including first-place finishes at Harvard University, Emory University, and the Tournament of Champions.
His desire to share his community’s story off the stage led him to found the Iowa Sikh Turbanators, a youth-led community service group focused on “turban-ating” the negative stigma surrounding Sikhism. JJ’s work advocating for Sikh civil liberties has earned him the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award, ACLU Youth Advocacy Award, and Emerging Citizen of the Year Award. JJ attended Interprod at Simpson College in Iowa during the summer after his junior year. He is excited to work with orators at Boston and Des Moines this summer!
Mackenzie Saunders is a junior at Arizona State University studying Politics and the Economy & Justice Studies. She is currently coaching forensics at Phoenix Country Day Middle School, one of the most successful middle school speech and debate programs in the nation. Mackenzie competed in interpretation events in middle school and high school, where she was a three-time high school national qualifier. Along with receiving dozens of individual in-state tournament championships in HI, Duo, and Prose, Mackenzie made waves on the national circuit by quarter-finaling at NSDA Nationals in Duo, finaling at Harvard in HI, and taking 9th place at NSDA Nationals in HI.
